Brief Comments on the Ones I've Seen:

BATMAN BEGINS-- Loved it.

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN-- Still thinking about it, but really liked it.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE-- Started crying from the first scene with the German bombers. (My date thought I was weird.) Was really was glad they didn't leave out certain character-developing parts, like leaving the wardrobe door open "because it is very foolish to lock oneself up in a wardrobe." Or this seemingly silly details like the blue-bottle fly buzzing on the window sill. (Yes, I read the books a few times as a child.) I was relieved that they didn't ruin the film, and was mostly pleased with it. I just didn't think that it had the magic that other film projects have captured (like Lord of the Rings).

CRASH-- Very good. I love it when movies can keep you so focused that you audibly gasp throughout. And I love it when they are so well written, the characters make your heart bleed.

HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE-- Was mildly disappointed. I am still working through my issues about where the movie series will be able to go in relation to the books. But, overall thought it was good. I really liked the dragons.

MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA-- Beautiful film. Loved the colors, the music, the tone of the film. It was beautiful.

PRIDE & PREJUDICE-- LOVED IT!!! The director, or Keira Knightley, really captured the loneliness of being in love. (You know, that lonliness that you feel when you are in love before you know that you are being loved back, and it seems that everyone around you is part of a couple.) This was a film. It can stand alone without the book. It has artistic merrit as a self entity. The other version, (although I still like it) is just a documentary of the book.

TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE-- Not my favorite. Watered down version of The Nightmare Before Christmas.

WAR OF THE WORLDS-- Really, really liked this adaptation of the novel... even though right now I really, really dislike Tom Cruise.

Woo Hoo! I have ten!

  2. You've gotta see King Kong, sit through 3+ riduculous hours, just to get to Jack Black's trite, emotionless line: "T'was beauty killed the beast. I died a little inside. Ll, what was Dodger's response to that line?

  3. Th.: They seem pretty sure about themselves don't they.

B.: I will not see King Kong unless I am strapped to a bed and forced to under Chinese Water Torture. I do not like monkeys, or apes, or giant apes. I sat through Planet of the Apes, because a boy told me that would get me over the phobia. It just made me really disappointed in Marky Mark.

Peter Jackman must have been planning that line since childhood. You died a little inside? Yep, your LL's twin. So, glad to finally meet you byt the way, I have heard so much about you.

  4. I will not see King Kong because I have heard that there are giant grasshoppers that gnaw on people's faces. I hate bugs in general and mutated bugs in specific.

  5. "T’was beauty that killed the beast..." is the famous quote from the original KING KONG, so they couldn't really have made a re-make without it.

It would be like re-making PLANET OF THE APES and not including the Statue of Liberty scene... oh... wait...

(Seriously, Absent-Minded, you saw the wrong PLANET... the original film is incredible... and it's a movie that's actually about something, an issue movie... not like the crappy re-make which was about seeing apes jump far, and which, plot-wise, was completely incomprehensible).

But seriously, it wouldn't really have been KING KONG without the famous line, so you had to put it in somewhere. But Jack Black didn't carry it very well. They should have given it to someone else perhaps.

  6. I could probably handle the large grasshoppers, until they started eating people's faces. Eww.

If there were giant spiders... drawing the line. Spiders=monkeys in my book. And Spider Monkeys, *shuddering uncontrollably* can I die?

  7. There may have been giant spiders. I can't remember. When this one scene with half a dozen raptors and countless brontosaurus feet passed the five minute mark, I kind of checked out and started thinking about more interesting things. Like laundry.
So, AMS, does this mean you won't be seeing Curious George? I have a feeling you'll be totally out of the loop come next year's Oscar party.

  8. Dogers: It's true, I have never seen the original. And I have seen the original PLANET OF THE APES. That is where my fear of monkeys came from. I was NOT supposed to be watching them, and my dad was, and I hid behind the couch. Complete terror filled my brain when Charlton Heston was in jail and tried to talk to other humans and they could not talk back.

LL: I might bend for Curious George, because I have a Curious George beanie baby. And I have only heard good things about CG.
