National Ice Cream Day, July 16th

National Ice Cream Day

And for all of you ice cream lovers, or just those of you trying to think of some good reason to eat ice cream, the 3rd Sunday in July is always National Ice Cream Day, declared so by President Reagan- see the following proclamation.
Proclamation 5219 -- National Ice Cream Month and National Ice Cream Day, 1984

July 9, 1984; By the President of the United States of America-A Proclamation

Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States. It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food. Over eight hundred and eighty-seven million gallons of ice cream were consumed in the United States in 1983.

The ice cream industry generates approximately $3.5 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of citizens. Indeed, nearly ten percent of all the milk produced by the United States dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, thereby contributing substantially to the economic well-being of the Nation's dairy industry.

The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 298, has designated July 1984 as "National Ice Cream Month," and July 15, 1984, as "National Ice Cream Day," and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of these events.

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim July 1984 as National Ice Cream Month and July 15, 1984, as National Ice Cream Day, and I call upon the people of the United States to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of July, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and ninth.

Ronald Reagan

So, there it is. A national proclamation to enjoy ice cream. We had better not ignore this. We need to prepare to enjoy this "perfect snack food" on this official holiday and need to "observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities." Forget those diets, this is a matter of national importance!

  1. Actually, from what I can gather from the proclamation, only July in 1984 was National Ice Cream Month and only the third Sunday in July 1984 was National Ice Cream Day. I see no place wherein he deems this to continue on in perpetuity.

However, this does remind me that we have food in a friend's freezer from when we had to be out of the apartment and we still didn't have a fridge.

  2. Even though I agree with your in perpetuity argument in general because I am against in perpetuity regarding things like property, and, um, land, or, um, zoning, I see no reason to not have a National Ice Cream Day in perpetuity. Are you really trying to not celebrate National Ice Cream Day? Because I might just have to come visit you with ice cream and make you celebrate. Especially since now you have a freezer, apparently.

  3. Apparently, our way of celebrating National Ice Cream Day was to go and get our freezer things that were being stored in a friend's freezer while we were without and then to leave the bag of freezer stuffs in the car overnight.

Needless to say, I am now officially opposed to National Ice Cream Day.

  4. Oh. I am sorry. And I am not laughing. Okay, maybe just a giggle, but really, I do feel very sorry for you. It's way too hot and you have too nice of a car to be doing stuff like that.
