Thunder in May

Thunder in May
Frightens the Summer away.

Please clarify. So if it frightens Summer away, does that mean Fall comes early, or does it mean Spring sticks around? Because if it's the latter, woo hoo!

Maybe it means we will have a long Spring and an early Fall.
