Cannon Beach

My favorite place in the whole world is Cannon Beach, Oregon. Which is where all the beach photos that I have posted on my blog were taken; including the one in the post directly below with me standing next to a sand squirrel, and a sand Smokey the Bear.

Every year Cannon Beach holds a Sand Castle Contest. This little tourist town of about 1,200 people explodes to about 20,000. The contest started as a local effort to raise spirits and encourage tourism after the effects of a devastating tsunami that hit the area March 27, 1964. It is absolutely insanely awesome. (Other Cannon Beach Tsunami Experience stories can be posted upon demand. Unless Edgy posts the story first. 'Cause he legitimately could. And he would probably tell the story better anyway.)

My grandma has a house right on the beach front, and so I was very lucky to spend my formative summers exploring the Oregon coastline.

And yes, I am nerdy enough to have done the tour.

You're just trying to make me uberpopular today with all the references.

I'll let you post the story as I don't quite remember all the details and if I were to post it, it would become an exercise in creative writing with you dragging three wailing, shirtless and shoeless children behind you as you race up the street to escape the oncoming surge of ocean. And all this while calling me to get the phone number for the local Chili's-to-Go.

See, you already made it a better story with me dragging shoeless and shirtless children.

As long as the children know that no shoes + no shirt = no service, they'll be fine.

Nice Oregon beach pics. My favorite place on the Oregon coast is the sea lion caves. I'm kind of a marine life nut, so . . .

Have you ever been to the Oregon Coast Aquarium? It's lots of fun, especially if you are a marine life nut. They even have a Sleep with the Sharks program.

Ooh, sleeping with sharks. That sounds fun. I haven't been there, and I'm adding it to the vacation list. My favorite aquarium so far was the New England Aquarium: in part because of the marine life and in part because I got to watch Harry Potter III on IMAX there. Good times.
